O Gallery presents "Inside, Outside," an exhibition of watercolor paintings by Erfan Rouhina (b. 2001 Tehran).
The works on display are comprised of two interconnected collections, developed in parallel since 2020. The works explore themes of space, still life and nature, resulting in a combination of interior scenes and still-life compositions, alongside recurring depictions of natural landscapes.
The choice of subjects reflects Rouhina’s daily interactions with his bedroom-studio, where an intimate relationship with his surroundings has gradually taken shape. Similarly, the landscapes evoke a deep connection to the natural environments he frequents and feels a strong sense of belonging to.
Despite his commitment to precision, Rouhina embraces the unpredictability of watercolor as a medium. This fluidity makes it impossible for him to fully envision the final outcome of a painting during its inception or even while working on it, often leaving him uncertain about when a piece is truly complete. This tension between control and spontaneity resonates with the themes of his work, which navigate the balance between tradition and innovation.
Reflecting on his influences, Rouhina aligns with those who see Iranian art as having faced significant challenges over the past century. However, he believes that the path forward lies in a balanced approach—eschewing both an extreme reliance on Western art and a rigid return to Iranian traditions. This vision is evident in his paintings, particularly in his nuanced approach to perspectives and textures.
