O Gallery presents a selection of photographs and sculptures by Hedieh Lotfi (b. 1987 Tehran), developed over approximately four years.
The exhibition recreates the lived experiences of figures caught in uncertain and complex situations. Often disconnected from the spaces around them, these works are based on the artist’s observations of her own experiences and the society around her; exploring the importance of reconsidering our relationship within the world we live in. Taken in 2022 in the confiscated former home of Sadegh Chubak, the photographs depict scenes planned in advance through detailed storyboards. Many of the interior spaces, objects and furniture were designed and built specifically for the project and lit using cinematic lighting techniques. The staged nature of the work and the process of building each scene were important parts of the project, drawing on the influence of artists such as Jeff Wall and Gregory Crewdson. Although carefully planned and constructed, the photographs do not show a specific event or tell one unique story. Instead, they focus on particular moments or feelings, such as uncertainty, hesitation and being caught between different possibilities.
The sculptures were designed alongside the photographs and developed throughout the pre-production, production and post-production of the photographs. Made at a one-to-one scale, they create a closer connection between the works and the viewers, allowing them to feel as if they are part of the scenes. Additional objects were later added to strengthen the connection between the photographs and the sculptures and to further emphasize the sense of suspension throughout the exhibition.
