Press Release

O Gallery presents “Saturation”, a series of monochrome works by Mehrdad Faraji (b. 1998 Tehran, Iran), marking the artist’s first solo show.

The series on display consists of graphite drawings on paper, wooden sculptures and an installation, shaped over a period of three years. Having worked with both volume and surface, Faraji developed a similar approach toward the two—shaping through adding and removing. The gradual process of each work engages material—graphite, paper, acrylic or oil—through repeated layering, abrasion and scraping, producing reflective surfaces that evoke polished metal shaped by time and labor. Faraji’s restrained choice of medium and process allows each work to unfold through duration, giving the surfaces a distinctly place-based quality. At the same time, the reflective saturated surfaces invite viewers to encounter the works as unstable visual states, continuously shifting through light, movement and changing environmental conditions.
